My friend and I went to the TCG Player Missouri State Tournament yesterday at Yeti Gaming in Crestwood, MO. If you’re in the St. Louis area, you should definitely check that place out. They’ve got a lot of good cards for sale, they’re reasonably priced, there’s plenty of space for playing, and the employees are very nice. As far as the tournament went, there were 91 competitors running a decent variety of decks. My friend took Selesnya Midrange to 8th place, and I played the following Naya Humans list to 31st place at 4-3:
Main Deck:
4x Champion of the Parish
4x Boros Elite
4x Burning-Tree Emissary
4x Lightning Mauler
4x Mayor of Avabruck
2x Hamlet Captain
2x Hellrider
4x Rancor
4x Boros Charm
4x Selesnya Charm
1x Faith’s Shield
1x Garruk Relentless
4x Temple Garden
4x Sacred Foundry
3x Stomping Ground
4x Sunpetal Grove
2x Clifftop Retreat
2x Cavern of Souls
1x Kessig Wolf Run
2x Plains
Sideboard:
2x Tormod’s Crypt
2x Mizzium Mortars
2x Ray of Revelation
2x Skullcrack
2x Pacifism
1x Sigarda, Host of Herons
1x Thragtusk
1x Faith’s Shield
1x Frontline Medic
1x Boros Reckoner
I’ll put a match-by-match breakdown after the cut, but all-in-all I had a lot of fun and I think I gained some valuable experience. To anyone who hasn’t competed in a tournament like this but plans to, my advice is to get plenty of sleep the night before. Seriously. Being tired makes you do stupid things.
Picked Selesnya, got paired with Orzhov, and got crap Selesnya cards, so I went Orzhov splashing green for Collective Blessing. Blood Baron of Vizkopa + Collective Blessing is good times. Or should I say “good tithes?”

I’m stoked. I’ve already got Kaalia and Omnath. I think I’ll like Mayael.
I bet you’d never guess I’m a Timmy.

Got to play in a Game Day for free, and there were only 6 of us, so we each got two Zameck Guildmage promos and a Firemane Avenger promo just for playing. I’m stoked. All I wanted was the Avenger, and I didn’t even have to compete for it.

In almost every game I’ve managed to drop Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. In one game I attacked with Kaalia, dropped Rakdos, Lord of Riots and made all my creatures cost 8 less. I then proceeded to play a couple of dragons for 4 mana, and on the next turn swung and dropped Gisela for 48 damage. This deck makes me so happy. I’m so glad I built it.

I hope she pulls some good stuff. I’m sure she’ll be excited either way.

I was playing Magic earlier and I had to argue with a guy because he thought that making my Elves huge with Ezuri, Renegade Leader after they attack made them illegal attackers because of his Ensnaring Bridge. I tried to explain that it checks during the declare attackers step, so boosting during declare blockers works, but he didn’t believe me.
I know Magic is a very complex game, and I never actually hold it against anyone when they don’t fully understand the rules. I don’t even fully understand them. It’s just really frustrating to know something for a fact and people don’t believe you. I wish I had some kind of badge or something that showed that I know what I’m talking about. It would be nice not having to look up stuff on Gatherer or pull up the comprehensive rules on my phone all the time.

I fought valiantly for the Sunhome today, but alas, better mages than I prevailed. My card pool wasn’t the greatest, but I went 3-2-1, which isn’t terrible. I paid for my friend to enter and she pulled about $40 worth of trade stock for which we worked out some trade deals with other people. I’m super close to finishing RDW, and I got Rakdos and Sylvan Primordial for EDH, so I’m not too disappointed.

Here’s the deck as it stands now:
Creatures: 27
4x Arbor Elf
4x Avacyn’s Pilgrim
4x Strangleroot Geist
3x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4x Loxodon Smiter
4x Silverblade Paladin
2x Wolfir Silverheart
1x Sigarda, Host of Herons
1x Thragtusk
Other Spells:
4x Rancor
4x Faith’s Shield
3x Selesnya Charm
Lands: 22
4x Temple Garden
4x Sunpetal Grove
2x Rogue’s Passage
1x Gavony Township
7x Forest
4x Plains
Sideboard:
1x Nevermore
2x Dryad Militant
2x Purify the Grave
1x Triumph of Ferocity
1x Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
4x Elite Inquisitor
1x Wolfir Silverheart
1x Selesnya Charm
2x Plains
Some Gatecrash cards I’m interested in are Skyknight Legionnaire, Frontline Medic, and Boros Charm. I’m just not sure how to adjust the deck to include these cards. I’m thinking about taking out Geist for Skyknight and going down to 3 each of Smiters and Paladins to put in 2 Medics. I’ll probably take out a Selesnya Charm and a Faith’s Shield to maindeck two Boros Charms, then take Triumph of Ferocity out to sideboard another.
As for lands, right now I have 4x Temple Garden, 4x Sunpetal Grove, 4x Rootbound Crag, and 1x Clifftop Retreat, so I’ll have to make those work for the mana base until or unless I can trade for some more dual lands. I’ll probably take out Gavony Township and put in Slayer’s Stronghold, because my deck usually only has two or three creatures on board, so I hardly ever find it worth the four mana to add two or three power to the board. I’d much rather just give my one big creature a slight boost and vigilance until end of turn while leaving up mana for a charm or something.
