Boy oh boy. People like to really bemoan Infect.

It’s not even that good, to me at least. I think it’s just the idea that the creatures are all essentially dealing twice the damage for the same cost. Oh it’s “so overpowered” and “I don’t play people that use it”. I just don’t get it.

Infect…

MaRo has said that helplessness was the feeling they wanted infect to create. He’s said it actually worked too well. But yeah, infect isn’t impossible to deal with. If you can beat Naya Blitz you can probably beat infect. Then again, nobody in my meta plays infect, so I don’t have much experience with how annoying it can be.

Dragon tribal, here we go. This guy is an EDH nightmare, I can see it now. Straight up, he’s not bad. ETB, do one damage to a creature or player, and a 4/4 firebreather for 5. Not terrible. But I can only assume this means we’ll see Dragon Hatchling again, meaning this guy can do some damage if he’s not answered. He’s pretty cool, albeit very situational. I hope I manage to crack one or two.

Karrthus decks would probably like this guy. Imagine a hand full of Dragons with Elvish Piper on the field. Or a Genesis Wave or Dragonstorm. Or freakin’ Utvara Hellkite. Crazy stuff. I’ll probably take something out of my Kaalia deck for one of these.

TCG Player Missouri State Tournament

My friend and I went to the TCG Player Missouri State Tournament yesterday at Yeti Gaming in Crestwood, MO. If you’re in the St. Louis area, you should definitely check that place out. They’ve got a lot of good cards for sale, they’re reasonably priced, there’s plenty of space for playing, and the employees are very nice. As far as the tournament went, there were 91 competitors running a decent variety of decks. My friend took Selesnya Midrange to 8th place, and I played the following Naya Humans list to 31st place at 4-3:

I’ll put a match-by-match breakdown after the cut, but all-in-all I had a lot of fun and I think I gained some valuable experience. To anyone who hasn’t competed in a tournament like this but plans to, my advice is to get plenty of sleep the night before. Seriously. Being tired makes you do stupid things.

Round 1 - RWU Flash

Game 1: He used a synergy between two Boros Reckoner and Izzet Staticaster to ping away for the win.

Game 2: I got mana screwed and anything I did play just got burned with Reckoner/Staticaster.

Result: Loss, 0-2

Round 2 – 4 Color Midrange

Game 1: I draw all four of my Boros Elite, a Lightning Mauler, and a Hellrider to close it out. There was nothing his two Huntmaster of the Fells could do about it.

Game2: I steamroll with Boros Elite, Lightning Mauler, and two Mayor of Avabruck, using Boros Charm to give an unblocked 5/5 Elite double-strike for the win.

Result: Win, 2-0

Round 3 – 4 Color Midrange

Game 1: I get a god hand – Turn 1 Elite. Turn 2 Emissary + Mauler and swing for 7. Do it again turn 3. Win on turn 4.

Game 2: His Dimir Charm wrecks my tempo and he keeps drawing effective removal to clear a path for his Loxodon Smiter. I can’t recover, and he kills me.

Game 3: Another god hand. See Game 1.

Result: Win, 2-1

Round 4 – Jund Aggro

Game 1: I get him to 12 life, then attack with a Hellrider and another creature. He blocks the other creature (I don’t remember why), and I use a Selesnya Charm and Boros Charm on my Hellrider, making it 5/5 with double-strike and killing him.

Game 2: I make the first of many mistakes in the tournament by keeping an atrocious hand. All red spells and only W/G lands. I lose quickly.

Game 3: I manage to stall for a while with a flipped Mayor until I topdeck a Hellrider for the win.

Result: Win, 2-1

Round 5 – Selesnya Midrange (I got matched up against my friend for this round)

Game 1: I keep another absolutely terrible hand. I was expecting to play Boros Elite into Emissary + Mayor, but my lands were a Plains and Sacred Foundry. I was delusional. I couldn’t play anything for the short duration of the game.

Game 2: I put on some pressure, getting him to 5 life, then he plays Thragtusk and takes himself out of range. I can’t recover, and I lose a few turns later.

Result: Loss, 0-2

Round 6 – Gruul Aggro

Game 1: I keep another terrible hand with 3 Lightning Mauler and no red sources, because I’m an idiot. At this point, a combination of exhaustion (5 hours of sleep + 3 hour drive) and tilt is really getting to me. I have a hard time playing anything the whole game and he wins.

Game 2: I can’t stuck at 2 lands and can’t do anything. I lose quickly.

Result: Loss, 0-2

Round 7 (final) – Junk Reanimator

Game 1: He has a hard time playing anything and I close it out pretty quickly.

Game 2: He manages to play Thragtusk and reanimates it when I kill it, keeping him out of range.

Game 3: It gets really tense as things like Thragtusk and Obzedat get me to 4 life, but I’ve been amassing an army of wolf tokens with a flipped Mayor and Garruk. He decides to attack me, so I take the damage. On my turn, I use Garruk to ping a blocker, then swing with two Hellriders for a total of 7 3/3 creatures. He takes 14 to the face and can’t block the rest of it. It was probably the coolest play I made the whole game.

Result: Win, 2-1

Anyone else excited about Modern Masters?

Apparently, Modern Masters boxes/boosters are only being given away to people who participate in Modern Tournaments at the only major branded LGS here. Kinda hard to get excited with such a limited supply. :|

(no preorders were allowed, and upon release, you aren’t even allowed to purchase boosters.)

My friend and I were looking at getting boxes because it’d be fun to draft, but the price is ridiculous. I guess we won’t now.

My store is planning to run a Modern Masters draft for like $30 a person. I’ll probably do it, but that will probably be my only interaction with Modern Masters. I’m not entirely sure what the goal of the set is. If it’s to make getting expensive Modern staples easier, I’m not sure it’ll meet it’s goal when the supplies are so limited and the packs are more expensive. We’ll see how it turns out though.

Favorite MTG Paraphernalia? (Sleeves, Dice, Playmats, lifecounters, etc.)

Mine would be sleeves. I love purchasing different kinds, and seeing how each of them shuffle and feel in my hands as I play… I’ve tried all sorts of Ultra pro, KMC, and Dragon Shields. Can’t wait to see other brands and test them out. :D

Playmats, fo sho. I own three currently (Sigarda, Sacred Foundry, and Gleam of Battle), and I look forward to getting more. I enjoy the larger pictures and the feel of the fabric.

I think the Dracogenius is better for EDH. As cool as the Firemind/Curiosity combo is, Dracogenius seems like a better source of card advantage and has a bigger body.

I think it looks like the box art symbol for Skyrim.

Jason Chan is an Concept Artist and Illustrator for Film, Video Games, and Print. He was born in Stockton, California and moved out to San Francisco to study 3D animation at the Academy of Art University, but promptly changed his major to illustration and graduated in the Spring of 06.

Ever since I was a kid I’ve always been drawing characters for make believe video games, cartoons and comics. I also loved drawing my favorite X-men characters, warcraft heroes, and video game sprites. I drew a million Mega Man and Mario drawings. As I grew up, that love for video games and fantasy never left me. I grew to love fantasy novels and that inspired my work. Many of my favorite video games were japanese made so as I drew the characters from those games, I began to fall for the anime style. Of course, that lead me to watch anime - an addiction I still haven’t been able to shake. After a couple of years of horrible attempts at manga style art, I began school in San Francisco and actually got some decent life drawing and anatomy practice.
